PAEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY
A pediatric cardiologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating heart problems in children, from newborns to young adults. They are different from adult cardiologists because children's hearts are still developing and have different needs.
What do pediatric cardiologists do?
Diagnose heart conditions in children using a variety of tests, such as echocardiograms, electrocardiograms, and chest X-rays.
Treat heart conditions with medications, surgery, or other procedures.
Provide follow-up care to children with heart conditions.
Counsel families about heart conditions and their treatment.
Some of the conditions that pediatric cardiologists treat include:
Congenital heart defects, which are heart problems that are present at birth.
Heart rhythm problems, such as arrhythmias.
Kawasaki disease, which is an inflammatory disease that can affect the heart.
Myocarditis, which is an inflammation of the heart muscle.
Pericarditis, which is an inflammation of the sac that surrounds the heart.
